My What's Contemporary Issue

Well, it's finally here!
My What's Contemporary issue is finally up!
I will wait to post the rest of the images tomorrow, but you can check out the full issue up at www.whatscontemporary.com.
All the images in the collages were made out of portions I sampled from different currencies from all over the world, as well as scans I made of old family photos my mom inherited when my grandma died a few years ago. It was a really special experience going through the photo's and incorporating them into my pictures. The image above is of my aunt when she was a little girl and when she was in high school. The Full concept is up on the site. I really hope you like it! Let me know what you think :)

My Riviera Magazine Cover

Hey Friends, how was your weekend?
Ours was great. We decorated for Christmas with friends today.
I still can't believe Christmas is only a week away.

I thought i would post the cover i did for Orange County based Riviera Magazine.
It was fun to do something with a magazine in my home town.

Also, tomorrow my issue of What's Contemporary comes out!
I'm really, really, really, really excited for you all to see it.
It's a lot different than my usual, and it's a really personal magazine issue.
So, can't wait to share that with you tomorrow.

Hey Friends.
Thanks for tuning in yesterday! It's starting to come around, huh? Well, we just picked up our Christmas tree tonight and made some hot chocolate! I am starting to get really excited for Christmas. The drawing today is an outfit design I did for my "What's Contemporary" Collection. I really like how it turned out. It has kind of an old Vogue feel to it, don't you think?

Hey friends, how was your weekend?
Mine was good. Had another Fringe weekend.
Also, worked a little on a project that will be released in a week or so.
I'm so excited for you to see it. It is seriously unlike anything i have ever done before.
I think the project is released next Monday. :)

The painting today is of a Valentino ad i saw in Vogue.
It's kinda funny how i ended up seeing the ad.
My mom bought a issue of Vogue because my friend Julia Frakes was in it,
and when i was looking through the magazine, this Valentino ad really stood out to me as something that would be fun to paint.
What do you think?

Also, i will be doing another live painting on Ustream tomorrow, Monday, December 12, at 12:30pm PST.
I will be adding another layer to the under painting.
Should be painting for 3 to 4 hours. Hope to see you then ;)

Hey Friends!
Happy inspiration Friday! We finally made it through another week! ... A freezing week, i might add. This week's inspiration Friday vibe is a sort of Romantic journey, where time seems to stand still as you're walking in and out of universes playing hide and seek! I hope it inspires you today ;)

On a different note, I decided to continue painting the 4' by 3' oil painting i'm working on all on Ustream. So i will try to each week paint the different layers for you. But i saw a lot of you had trouble because of the time difference watching it. Is there a good time for me to do the next one? I'm thinking of doing it this coming up Monday (December 12), at either 10am or 2pm PST and i would paint for 3 or 4 hours.

Hi everyone! Thanks so much to everyone who tuned in yesterday to watch the live stream of me painting! It was really fun for me to share that with you and I hope you all enjoyed it. :) If you missed it, I'm thinking of continuing to stream the progress of that painting as I go along with it. I first saw a picture of her on Tumblr and really loved it! This painting drawing is inspired by a picture of her I found on Premier Model Management's website. When I first found it I really thought she had a great look and thought I would do a quick sketch of it. I hope you like it! :)

Hey Friends, sorry i wasn't able to get the ustream up today.
The initial sketch on the wood took way longer than i thought it would.
So i guess we will have to do it tomorrow (Tuesday, December 6th) at 2 p.m. PST. ;)
The portrait today is of my good friend, Satoru Sugimoto.
Satoru was the man who put our trip to Tokyo together.
He was seriously one of the biggest highlights of the trip for us.
Such a fun and kind person. I did this portrait of him right after our trip. i thought you would like it. :)

Very Rough Draft for Tomorrow

Hello Friends, How was your weekend? Mine was wonderful. We basically hung out all weekend watching the first Season of the TV show, Fringe. I forgot how good that season was. Well, the sketch today is a super duper rough draft sketch i did for an oil painting i want to start tomorrow. The sketch is inspired by Andreas Öhlund's photo of Mona Johannesson and Bo Deveilus for Stockholm S/S/A/W. I was thinking of possibly Live Ustreaming me painting tomorrow. I'm not sure if it would be too boring for yawl. hah. Let me know if it is something you would like, cause I will need to pick up my studio for it. It's a complete mess right now! How was your week? I don't know if i am the only person who feels like this, but did this week feel really long? I'm so tired today. I feel like i have been moving in slow motion. On a positive note, I finally got an Inspiration Friday post up. I just realized how long since i posted an inspiration Friday post. i planned the next four weeks of Inspiration Friday posts. It basically took me all day to lay them out, but I really like how they turned out. I hope you like the pictures. :)

Blinded by the Glow - Natalia Vodianova

Hey Friends,
Well been working night and day trying to finish a side project. To be in the right mood for the project, I have been listening to different composers and symphonies. After two days of that, tonight I decided I needed a big change of pace. So needless to say, I have Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" stuck in my head now. Oh well. Haha I had started this painting a few weeks ago but i actually think the party feel of "Last Friday Night" really came through in the brighter colors of the painting. Haha! The painting seriously didn't come together until the last minute, and I'm not sure what it is about this one, but I think I like it. I love painting Natalia Vodianova. She is really amazing. Well, i hope you're having a great night. :)

Hey Friends, how was your weekend?
I was cleaning up my room and i found the sketchbook i took with me to Tokyo. I had completely forgotten i had done a handful of sketches while on the flight. Above are a few of them. On the left hand side is a quick contour sketch of my brother on the flight and on the right side, a study sketch of a human eye. Really hope you like it. Also i saw that some of you were a little frustrated by the lack of posting of drawings. Lately i've had to finish up some personal things, but i'm hoping to get back drawing this week. So please don't give up on me ;)

I know i have already posted about the Araisara show from Tokyo Fashion Week, but there were a handful of photos i took off the reflections of the floor.
Our new friend Hiro is a genius and did the Show production.
The floor looked just like water and made beautiful abstract forms.
I really like how the photos turned out.

Araisara Spring 2012 - Tokyo Fashion Week

Hi everyone!
We are busy, busy, busy! How are you?
These pictures are from the Araisara Spring 2012 show from Tokyo Fashion Week. So this show was produced by our friend Hiro who we met while in Tokyo. He actually produced a lot of the runway shows during Tokyo Fashion Week, and his shows always stood out. But more on Hiro later :)
Araisara's collection had cool mix of styles as some of the cuts were very traditional Japanese while others were very modern. There was an interesting mix of colors as well, with hot pink, gold, black and then more subdued greys and tans. The theme of the show was "Deep Ocean" and the runway was covered with a reflective, black, textured material that really created the illusion that the models were walking upon the open sea. We hope you like the photos!

Anrealage Spring 2012 - Tokyo Fashion Week

Hey Friends,
The Anrealage Spring 2012 show was connected with the Mint designs show. We had read up quite a bit on Mint designs when preparing for Tokyo Fashion week, and at the time we didn't know Anrealage was doing the joint show with them. But they actually turned out to be one of our favorites. The models walked very slowly down the runway, even stopping at times to allow the audience to admire the garments. There were 2 to 4 models out on the runway at any given time. There was a very deliberate, patient manner in which the collection was presented. One thing that really stood out was their very soft color palette and the subtle details. There were nearly transparent garments layered over another with a pattern of soft colors and together they made a wonderful combination.

My friend Christopher Michael had asked me to participate with a project called What's Contemporary and at first I wasn't sure what would be the best thing to do for it, but I eventually decided to design a mini-collection and these are some of the drawings for it. Happy Halloween!
We thought the Christian Dada collection would be a perfect post for tonight as the show was the darkest and eeriest of Tokyo Fashion Week. The lighting was very dramatic and intense as was the collection. It had a certain something that reminded us of The Cell, a movie by Tarsem, the director of The Fall, which is a favorite movie of ours. There were life size bird cages, metal-work face masks, long flawy dress, and an elk antler wedding dress. We really like how the pictures turned out!!! Do you think they are Halloween spooky?!

Ambell Spring 2012 Tokyo Fashion Week

Ambell was a really mellow, fun show that happened in the evening later in the week. As we were generally so busy during Tokyo Fashion Week, it was a nice change of pace. It was held upstairs at the Mercedes-Benz Connection, the same venue where the Vantan & Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Presentation had been. Everyone gathered upstairs and grabbed drinks at their leisure and then wandered in and out among the other viewers and the mannequins donning the collection. We had the pleasure of meeting Bunzo Kadono, the designer for Ambell. He was very nice and said that the 1920s was a big inspiration for him in this collection and that he liked the era because it was a time where a lot of innovation was happening in women's fashion. We, of course, loved this, as this has always been one of our favorite eras as well. The collection consisted of some bright, colorful floral prints as well as intricate lace work and also classic cuts with white and navy blue stripes. And obviously, the bouquet hats were very fun :) We hope you are enjoying the Tokyo Fashion Week photographs!
